Lazy? There's an app for that!

On May 23, I finally entered the world of smart phones. My daughter and I both purchased the Samsung Galaxy s4. I have a love/hate relationship with my phone. On the one hand, I really like being able to access anything I want. On the other hand, my phone always has access to me! It is always dinging and buzzing to let me know of notifications: phone calls, emails, texts, Facebook activity, my turn at Words With Friends...you name it.

But the smart phone thing is really pretty cool. Not only can I check my email and Facebook accounts and browse the Internet, but there is an app for just about anything you can imagine. I can read books from the library, play games, look up words in the dictionary, scan QR codes, read my bible, make shopping lists, get recipes, and look at the stars. But one of my favorite, most useful apps is my flashlight.
But where is all this dependency on modern technology heading? True story: I told my manager, Nicole, about the flashlight app. One night as she was lying in bed, she dropped her glasses. She couldn't find them. All she would have had to do is to sit up and turn on the light. But she decided to install the flashlight app on her phone instead. She found her glasses and was not inconvenienced by the old fashioned method of actually using her electric light.

While I find this story wildly amusing...one has to wonder what other sorts of apps will be available in the future to help us along in our endeavor for the search of ease and convenience. I have to admit, smart phones are great little one stop devices. But we must be careful not to become too overly dependent on anything man creates. After all, batteries go dead and phones are lost. Take, for instance, my friend Shea. She was talking to her boyfriend on the phone one day and was freaking out because she couldn't find her cell phone....I'll just let that sink in a little bit.

So, Dear Reader, what's your favorite thing about smart phones? Leave a comment...I would love to hear from you.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5-6

Dove Wisdom

Today is the first day I've had a chance since school's been out to do any cleaning and organizing around home. I've been cleaning my room, which was a total mess. I came across the Dove chocolate wrappers from a bag I received as a thank you gift. As an added surprise...there was one chocolate left! So I thought I would share some Dove wisdom with you.

  •  Take time for yourself today
  •  Dare to dream
  • Feel the sun on your face
  • Laugh whenever possible
  • Be good to yourself today
  • Happiness is in the heart, not in the circumstances
  • Chocolate is a gift of love
  • Live in the present
  • Give yourself permission
  • Sometimes one smile means more than a dozen roses
  • Enjoy the small things in life
  • Clear your mind and enjoy this moment
  • Buy flowers for yourself
  • Create a happy place
And last but not least:
If you made it this far, I wish for you a good day and God's abundant blessings. Make someone smile today.

So, dear Reader...what do you do for yourself? for others? What words of wisdom can you offer? What happy thing has happened for you lately? Leave a comment...I would love to hear from you.

"Behold, what I have seen to be good and fitting is to eat and drink and find enjoyment in all the toil with which one toils under the sun the few days of his life that God has given him, for this is his lot. Everyone also to whom God has given wealth and possessions and power to enjoy them, and to accept his lot and rejoice in his toil--this is the gift of God. For he will not much remember the days of his life because God keeps him occupied with joy in his heart."   Ecclesiastes 5:18-20

Too much Chinese food?

I love Chinese food. I know this because my fortune cookie told me.

I love sweet and sour chicken and white rice. But lately, I've been wondering if I eat it too often. For evidence I offer this pic of fortune cookies that are piling up on my desk.

I don't really like fortune cookies, so I usually just throw them aside. I feel guilty not taking them from the restaurant because it feels insulting somehow. Like maybe they were trying to bring me good luck and I rejected it. What if I turn down a fortune cookie and something terrible happens? It would be my fault! I can't seem to throw them away at home either.
So occasionally I open one to see what it says. So far:

Honesty and integrity are just some of your best attributes.
He who expects no gratitude shall never be disappointed.
You achieve great peace of mind when you talk with an old friend.

I also currently have three sets of chopsticks in my pencil holder. So maybe the next time I get Chinese take out, I can tell them, "Oh, I already have chopsticks and fortune cookies, so I don't need any more." Maybe then I can turn down the cookie and not have any bad luck. Who knows?

So anyway...what do you think? Is eating Chinese food two or three times a week too much? Leave a comment. I can't promise it will change my habits, but I'd love to hear from you.

"Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”        John 6:27

Introduction to Me!

Hello! This is my introductory blog. How exciting! Allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I am a single mom of two gorgeous daughters. I am also a photography student at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. I am in my penultimate semester.

I love to read. I enjoy watching movies. I work at a movie theater so I can see them for free. The problem with that is between working two jobs and keeping up with my homework, I never have time to go see them. Law and Order is my favorite TV show...but, I watch it online because I currently don't have a TV.

The reason I felt led to start blogging is to develop my writing and photography. I figured that if I had a blog I would be forced to write, to think, and to photograph. So there you have it. If you're looking for a blog that has a distinct purpose, you've come to the wrong place...unless you consider comments about stuff that goes on inside my head a distinct purpose. (Scary...tsk, tsk) But if you care to follow along, look at a wide range of photos, and share your thoughts, then I'm glad you joined me! I'd love to hear from you.
